But lately we've gone beyond that debate and started wondering about the future. There's clearly things we hope she inherits from Sonja and not me (perfect teeth, healthy skin). And there's even a couple things (believe it or not) we hope she inherits from me and not Sonja (sense of direction, for example).
But the truly magical stuff goes so far beyond those matter-of-fact concepts. Not far beyond in terms of their scope... I'm still talking little stuff here. I'm not ready to start discussing the role Sonja and I will play in the ultimate success and happiness of a human being. That's too heady for the moment.
We want to know what her voice is going to sound like. Will she snort when she laughs? Will she like her hair short or long? Will she be left-handed? Where will she be ticklish? What kind of face will she make the first time she tastes mashed sweet potatoes? Will she be good at math? Play an instrument? Like sports? Will she rather go for a bike ride or play a game inside?
We've already started seeing some questions answered as Zoe's personality unfurls before us each day. She certainly seems to have picked up Sonja's love of books...

"Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers."
-- Charles W. Eliot
I believe I can safely speak for Sonja (although she's been sleeping for hours) when I say the best part about being a parent for us isn't teaching, but learning. Learning about being parents. Learning from being parents. Learning about each other. Learning from each other. Learning about Zoe. Learning from Zoe.

"Only those who look with the eyes of children can lose themselves in the object of their wonder."

Zoe is going to be Zoe, with a little bit of her mommy and daddy mixed in. She will be a reader, she will be chatty, she will have a terrific personality, she will have a kind heart. She will be a fun seeker, she will be a spur of the moment, she will be funny, she will be laid back. She will be a great little kid and a beautiful adult.
Wow, wonderfully written. It's fun when you get beyond the "Whoa, what do I do now that this baby is here?" to the "Wow, isn't being a parent great?" It sounds like Zoe's a wonderful baby (of course as relayed to me by her Busia :) I'm glad to read that you're enjoying every moment.
Cuz Cindy
AND IF SHE INDEED BECOMES AN AVID READER, YOU CAN MOST CERTAINLY COUNT ON HER BEING UNCONSCIOUS AT TIMES. AND THAT CAN BE A REALLY GOOD THING.
