For the Folks in Mexico...

This blog was created to keep family and friends (near and far) updated on our lives. With my mom and dad in Mexico, I hope to do just that with this post. Mom, Dad ... while you're soaking up the sun, we're freezing out butts off in Michigan and missing you like crazy.

On with the post...
.
All is well in Zoe's world. Most days, she's happy to be a 'big girl' and help with little tasks around the house, like making dinner ...

... or pulling Mitchell on the sled on a rare above-freezing day.

On those days that it isn't above freezing, we try to find things to do that are a) inside and b) cheap! The Chelsea Library fits both criteria. They have this great little playroom that the kids love.

Currently, one of Zoe's favorite activities is practicing writing her letters. She says she wants to do it perfectly. She's also convinced she can read. Granted, she's doing pretty well with letter sounds and is beginning to sound out simple words, but it'll be a while before she's occupying Mitchell and Alyse with board books. I can't wait for that day!

Speaking of Mitchell and Alyse, they recently had their nine-month check ups. All is well and only one shot! I also learned something: I used to think Zoe's slight build was due to one too many respiratory illnesses in a row when she was an infant, but now I attribute it to genes (and not mine). Rich always says he had to fight to keep weight on until he discovered beer and nachos. I guess the kids take after him.

Mitchell weighed in at 17 lbs., 15 oz. and is 29 inches. That's the 20th percentile for weight and the 75th for height.

Alyse weighs 16 lbs., 10 oz and is 28 inches. That's the 10th percentile for weight and the 75th for height.
.
Zoe was 16 lbs. 3 oz. and 28 1/2 inches at her nine-month check up. See a pattern here?

Mitchell's favorite activity is trying to stand up using anything as a prop, including his sister's head. He's still content to zoom around on his belly, combat-crawl style. When he's on the hardwood, he drags his legs and reminds me of a penguin sliding on the ice. I'm convinced he's going to have massive shoulders by the time he's walking. He also has a mouth full of teeth (four on top, two on bottom) that he's discovered are great for biting into things, like mama's shoulder and sister's foot. Luckily, he also has become such a love and gives slobbery open-mouth kisses whenever asked.
.
Alyse finally became mobile (not counting the rolling) and actually beat Mitchell to hands-and-knees crawling. She's slow, but effective. She's more focused on communication than her brother. For quite a while now she been clapping and waving and is working on expanding her vocabulary, which currently contains one more word than Mitchell's. It is this word that she utters about a hundred times, from the moment she wakes to about two minutes before she drifts off to sleep. That word is "YEP!" She will demonstrate her formidable 'yepping' skills in a video at the end of this entry.

Now a couple more recent photos.

The kids like crawling through this tunnel. Here's Mitchell after spotting the camera.

Dziadzia stopped by for a visit before taking Zoe to a U of M women's basketball game on Sunday. He and Alyse played with her toy ... until she spotted the camera.

Zoe after the game, which she kept referring to as the football game (her sports-writing daddy loved that).

And now, some video for no other reason than I finally downloaded them to our computer and thought I'd share a couple. I have the hardest time getting candid photos of the kids and capturing anything spontaneous on video. They stop what they're doing and grin like The Cheshire Cat as soon as either appears.
.
Here's a time I was acutally able to capture something as it happened, thanks to Busia. It's from the beginning of January at the exact moment Mitchell figured out how to clap when Busia sang Pat-a-Cake to him.

And here is Alyse doing what she does best ... yepping!

Take care,
ZMA's mama

WHAT!?!?!?!

We're still working on a new mega-post, with lots of pictures and stories from the holiday season. But until we get a chance to download and sort through the camera, I thought I'd share this quick conversation I overheard tonight:

Momma: "So Zoe, we still haven't really told Santa what you want for Christmas. What do you want?"

Zoe: "More babies."

After they splashed some cold water on my face and picked me up off the floor, I had to ask Sonja: "You did say 'No,' right?" She did. Phew.

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like ...

A nice, wet, fresh batch of snow fell today. Perfect conditions for our first snowman of the winter.
.
Speaking of snow, I've been meaning to share this conversation that took place between Zoe and I shortly after the first snowfall of the year:

------------------

"Daddy, how do you know the difference between snow and bird poop?"
.
"What!?"
.
"How do you know the difference between snow and bird poop if they're both white? I don't want to walk in bird poop."
.
"Well ... snow is cold. And crunchy. And all white. Bird poop isn't cold. It's watery. And it usually has different colors mixed in."
.
"Oh."
.
"And since it's winter time, that means any white stuff on the ground is probably snow. Most birds fly south for the winter, so there's not much bird poop."
.
"Where do they go?"
.
"Florida, where it's warmer."
.
"So now they're pooping on Florida?"
.
"Yep."
.
"That's gross."
.
------------------

Heaven help us when we have TWO of them asking questions.

Election Day

Zoe says: "I hope Baran Obacko loses and Aunt Steph is President."

A solid choice.

The Pop Rocks Incident

Zoe came home from preschool with a bag of treats in a Halloween bag. The first thing she pulls out is a little package of Pop Rocks. "I want some of these."

I'm sure you know what they are ... the fruit-flavored candy that sort of pops and fizzles in your mouth. I put the odds of Zoe actually enjoying a Pop Rocks experience at roughly 1,000,000-to-1 for two reasons:

1. She doesn't like much candy. While she's slowly becoming more of a junk food eater than she's ever been (and we'd like), she's more of a baked goods fan: donuts, cakes, pies, etc.

2. She's always had a "texture" issue. Certain textures immediately get spit right back out ... and you'd certainly think popping and fizzling would fit into that category.

So I explained to her I didn't think she'd like Pop Rocks.

"Yes I do."

I don't think so, honey. They pop in your mouth.

"I like that."

I don't think you will.

"Yes I will."

OK ... here you go. And, guess what? She thought it was hilarious. She ran around the kitchen laughing, candy popping and fizzling inside her mouth.

Zoe 1, Dad 0.

A couple minutes later, I was at the kitchen sink washing dishes when I hear: "Daddy, Alyse likes Pop Rocks, too."

I turn to see Alyse, mouth agape, with a stunned look of confusion on her face. She stuck her tongue out to reveal a couple fizzling Pop Rocks. I might have been wrong about whether or not Zoe would like them, but I'm 100-percent certain that Alyse did not.

Fortunately, Zoe didn't follow up the taste test with a sip of Coke. We all know that's how Mikey from the LIFE cereal commercials met his untimely death.

Pop Goes the Patience

Pop.
"Did you hear that one?"

Pop.
"Did you hear that one?"

Pop.
"Did you hear that one?"

Pop.
"Did you hear that one?"

Pop.
"Did you hear that one?"

.
Zoe got her hands on some bubblewrap today. Fun for everyone.

Lyrical gangsta

Momma, don't let your babies grow up to be writers. Let 'em be doctors and cowboys and stuff.

While the industry I love continues to crumble around me (glad to hear my friend, Mark, wasn't part of this latest mass layoff in Arizona), my oldest daughter has suddenly gotten the writing bug.

I stepped out of the bathroom for a minute the other day and came back to the scenario you see above. I asked Zoe, "what does that say?" Her reply: "My name is Zoe, I love Busia and I live at 457 Savannah Lane." I guess the "X" implies the missing conjunctions and modifiers.

Let's just hope she only plans to use her skills to differentiate herself from the other unable-to-compile-a-sensical-email employees in her chosen field.
(Yes, I'm back!)

Sickness All Around

I took the morning off to take Zoe to her third day of preschool, so I thought I'd take a minute for an update.

Thursday brought us our first trip to the ER with one of the twins. Alyse developed a strange rash on her lower leg that we later found out was called Petechiae (Pinpoint, unraised, round red spots under the skin caused by bleeding) and should never be taken lightly. After a trip to her doctor, a blood draw at St. Joe's and the subsequent spread of the rash, we were off to U of M Motts. Many, many hours later, Alyse pretty much stumped the docs. They said that the rash usually accompanies some major illnesses, but Alyse was asymptomatic. She received some intravenous antibiotics and was released. They're guessing it was a virus. Earlier in the week, she was a little fussy one night, but never had a fever or any other symptoms that would have told us she was really ill. The rash is now pretty much gone, but she sure gave us a good scare.

If it was just a virus, it may be the culprit of some pretty cranky, tired siblings. Zoe and Mitchell are being kicked in the butt by a nasty cold. Zoe is on the tail end, but she's still pretty tired. After putting Mitchell to bed on Saturday night, I walked down to find this...

Zoe had zonked out eating dinner.

With everyone on the mend, I had some happy babies greet me this morning. Here's a couple shots from our morning play time.

That's all for now.

Take care,
ZMA's mama

Labor Day Weekend

I'm going to keep this short and sweet since all three kids are sleeping, so should I!

The kids and I spent six days (two of those spent mostly, it seemed, on the road) around Labor Day at my parents in Newaygo.

Zoe on her maiden voyage down the same slide I slid down every summer of my childhood. If I can get time, I will load the video. She was so, so proud. As you can see, it really does take a village!

Ms. Alyse during tummy time. It's not her favorite thing. "Hey, can someone help me out here?"

Alyse, crashed out on Honey after a hard day of entertaining.

Mr. Mitchell, flirting as usual. "What'd you say? Oh yeah, I know I'm cute!"

Cuddling our friend, Lori.

The September Birthday Crew. Papa, Uncle Bill, Cousin Sam and Sis Shane (holding Alyse).

Zoe enjoying some birthday cake on Uncle Tommy's lap. She has him sooooo wrapped!

It was a great visit! Thanks all.

It's Been A While...

and a lot has happened, but it hasn't been very well documented. Now I understand why my baby book was written on random sheets of paper instead of neatly printed in my pink baby book. I was the third child. Time is limited. Zoe would sneeze and I took a picture, wrote about it and called my mom before you could say, Bless You. Actually, that's not entirely true. Her baby book was mostly written in a Word document that I emailed back and forth between home and work. With these guys, I'm just hoping I manage to document their first tooth and steps before they leave for college. I'm trying, but as so many of you out there know, it ain't easy.

But we do have this blog!

I did manage to get one picture during the entire duration of a visit with my mom, dad, sister (Shane) and niece (Dani) at the end of July. Luckily, it's a good one. Mitchell finds kisses from aunts hilarious!

Zoe has been trying to keep busy amidst the chaos in the house. Here's a picture of her jumping into her little pool on a sweltering afternoon. We had to watch each jump and she named them, accordingly. This one was something like a "Super Duper Flooper jump."

She's still quite into her 'art projects.' Here she is creating a masterpiece while demonstrating her tongue rolling talents. Oddly enough, this is how I often held my tongue while concentrating as a child. I also have a lovely picture of her crossing her eyes. Are you laughing, Mom?

Having to deal with one new sibling must be hard for a kid, but two at once? For the most part, she's adjusted well. Sure, there's been some days...but she does seem to genuinely love her babies. On Sunday, with Daddy picking up an extra shift, Zoe turned into Mommy's helper. Both babies were insisting on being fed at the same time (as they often do), so I asked her if she thought she'd be able to give Mitchell a bottle all by herself. She quickly replied, "I can handle it!" The best part was that Mitchell loved it. After the meal, Mitchell didn't want to move. He poked at Zoe's face and pulled her hair, laughing the whole time. The miracle was that she put up with it and laughed back. It was precious!

That same Sunday, I decided it was time to stage three-month pictures of the babies. They are almost 16 weeks. Ideally, I'd have a professional do this, but having almost missed my window, I thought I'd try to take some on my own. Far from pro quality, but I managed some cute faces!

On that same note, we still haven't managed to get Zoe's three year picture done. It's still in the plans, but Zoe decided I better take one of her anyway...in case I forget!

This is a favorite picture from last week. Alyse sleeping. LOVE sleeping babies!

I can't manage to get a similar one of Mitchell since he usually sleeps in his swing during the day, but here he is testing out a Bumbo seat we borrowed.

Alyse in her bouncy with a big smile.

I think my favorite part of the last month has been watching the kids become more and more aware of each other. They've begun to grab at each other while playing and hold hands while tandem nursing. We've been trying to capture the hand holding for a while, but obviously the logistics of it poses a bit of a problem. Luckily, on Monday, they continued to hold hands once they were finished and Rich grabbed the camera and shot over my shoulder while they lay on the nursing pillow.

*SIGH*

I'm realizing more and more that though it's going to be a challenge raising two the same age, it's also going to be amazing to watch them grow up together.

Take Care,
ZMA's mama

PS. Before I log off, I wondered if anyone out there has been missing my husband's wonderful blog writing as much as me? If you're bored with my accounts of our life, leave a comment (but be kind) letting Mr. Mom know that he needs to start posting more!

Fourth of July and A Day at Home

Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, dear America. Happy birthday to you.
Zoe sang that song at some point over the long Independence Day weekend. What a firecracker. Get it?

What did we do? Hmmm. Besides hanging out at Busia and Dziadzia's house ... we took Zoe to see really bad Beattles impersonators on Friday night (they played Yellow Submarine, so it was worth the trip for Zoe ... the elephant ear was a favorite, too) and the Bay City Fireworks spectacular on Saturday night ("I liked all the colors, but it was too loud," Zoe said).

Mitchell and Alyse didn't make those trips -- thanks to Busia and Dziadzia for watching them so we could take Zoe -- but they did make an appearance at Uncle Norman and Aunt Midge's anniversary party Saturday afternoon.

With all the kids dressed in their finest red-white-and-blue attire, Momma wanted to snap a family portrait:

In Sonja's words, ""Thirty shots and this is the best. We need a professional!" Someday soon.

Some more party pictures:

Zoe and her 'Aunt Tephs.'

Uncle Gordon showing off his formidable baby-holding skills.

Alyse and cousin Emily. Check back in four years and we'll likely have a photo of Alyse wearing that blue sundress Emily has on!

Aunt Midge (in her party hat) and SupaBusia helped out with dinner.

And here's Marissa, our hostess with the mostest, holding a very sleepy Mitchell.

It was a great weekend of frivolity ... and we were glad to be able to introduce the babies to some family members for the first time. We're all already looking forward to Family Reunion 2009.

A DAY AT HOME
Some of you may not know that I've rearranged my workload to spend most days at home with the kids. I've cut back to part-time at Domino's -- foregoing my previous designs tasks to work primarily as an editor/writer on the three publications we produce, much of which I do from home -- and picked up some additional evening hours for the Ann Arbor News.

Sonja, meanwhile, is back to work 30 hours per week and will be full-time again at the end of August. She often gets solo night shifts ... which I'm certain is the more difficult of the two.

The other day I sent Sonja these photos so she'd know what was going on at home ... and to let her know we were thinking of her:

Catching up...

A lot has happened in the three-and-a-half weeks since the last post: Two visits to Newaygo, my return to work (early, due to that darn best rest), a trip to Bay City and Mitchell and Alyse's two month check-up.

First, some pictures from Zoe's trip to my parents' house at the end of May, where she got some major spoiling.

Observe Zoe in her self-decorated ballerina outfit, courtesy of Honey. Now she thinks she's a ballerina princess! I'm sure Rich will be putting in some overtime playing catch with her to counteract this stage.

Enjoying the beach with cousin Danni:

Petting a stingray at John Ball Zoo. Notice how she has her tongue in her cheek. This means she's extremely proud of herself.

Until this visit to the zoo, we could rarely get her to pet anything more wild than Busia and Dziadzia's cats or my sister's small dog. Quite a step for her. As I was told, it took a bit of coaxing and a lot of patience.

Honey, Aunt Shane and Danni started Zoe in the petting zoo and worked her up to this....

What happened to ponies?

Thanks to the family for showing her such a great time.
.
As I've mentioned, I don't know where we'd be without all the help we've received the past two months. This includes Monday visits from The Good Doctor and Wednesday visits (which often extend into Thursday ... or Friday) from Busia. Here she is on one of those visits. I left her alone with the three kids to run errands and came home to find two sleeping babies and a happy 3-year-old. Ahhhhhh! What a pro.

The second week of June we all trekked to Newaygo. Rich was supposed to go on his annual kayaking trip with the guys from the News. They kayak the Pine River and camp in a town about 30 minutes from my parents. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate and his kayak remained fastened to the top of our mini-van. While Dad rode out the storms, Mitchell and Alyse got acquainted with some of their cousins.

Cousin Sam was more than happy to take a baby off my hands and soon had Mitchell chuckling.

Seeing a cute photo op, I plopped Alyse in cousin Sid's arms. He was decidedly less enthused about holding a baby (I believe his exact words were, "Could you take this baby NOW?"). Despite that fact, Alyse tried to charm him with her sweet smile.

Zoe spent every morning at Honey's in her favorite spot...the hammock swing.

This past Sunday was not only Father's Day, but also the day we took a trip to Bay City to celebrate Busia and Dziadzia's June birthdays.

The trip enabled Mitchell and Alyse to meet their great-grandmother, SupaBusia!

Zoe kept busy playing lawn darts with Dziadzia, petting her 'best friend' Calico...

... and running through the sprinkler.

Mitchell had a good time grinning for the family (Thanks for holding up my head, Dad)!

As did Alyse.

The birthday boy and girl.

A final bit of news. Mitchell and Alyse had their two-month check-up on Monday (they are nine weeks). Mitchell tips the scales at 10 lbs. 7 oz. and is 22.75 inches tall. A gain of 9 ounces and 1.75 inches.

Ms. Alyse checked in at a mere 9 lbs. 4 oz. and 22.5 inches tall. A gain of 3 oz. and 1.75 inches.

Both kids remain in the 50th percentile for weight and the 25th for height for their actual age and 75th and 50th for their adjusted age (the age they would be if they were born on their due date).

That's all for now. Take care.
