Happy 4th, 1st & 1st Birthday

We butchered the most popular song in the world on Saturday. There we were, about 20 or so folks gathered in the party room at The Treehouse, harmonizing a structurally simple song that consists of just four lines -- three of which are identical.

Happy birthday to you.
Happy birthday to you.
Happy birthday, dear .... (all hell breaks loose).
Happy birthday to you.

To be fair, it's tough to squeeze three names into those two beats. And what order do you sing them? We should have practiced first.

Singing aside, we had a great time celebrating Zoe's fourth birthday (six days early) and the babies' first birthday (four days late).

Here's Mitchell and Alyse with their cakes:

And here's Zoe with her own. She somehow has become a big fan of the Care Bears, which I think were last popular in 1988. But Sonja did a great job finding the one bakery in Washtenaw County that still offers them as a decorating option ... and even found a Goodnight Bear online.

Alyse loved her cake, as evidenced by this shot:

Mitchell? Eh. Not so much. He wasn't even interested in a bite with Aunt Steph's help.

Zoe wanted her slice of cake to be the middle piece, where it said "Happy Birthday." And what my daughter wants six days before her fourth birthday, she gets six days before her fourth birthday.

While Mitchell wasn't thrilled with the cake, he was quite comfortable in the party atmosphere. Here he's sidling up to Aunt Shanie to ask, "So, you come here often?"

The girls, in matching pink, were getting picked up, too. Dziadzia got the heavy one!

Downstairs, there was a chance to play with Lily and Danni.

About a month ago, we were certain both babies would be walking by their first birthday. Not quite ... although Mitchell is really, really close. But Alyse did unveil a few new tricks recently ... one is giving high-fives (with Papa, below). The other is coming later.

After the party, we headed home and the babies took a ride on their new bike-type-things:

Poor Mitchell had a rough day. First, at the party, he fell and bumped his chin on a table and bit his tongue. It bled like crazy and resulted in him not drinking from a bottle or sippy cup for a couple days. Minutes after the above picture was taken, he flipped that little bike and got a little concrete burn on his forehead and cheek. You can kinda see them in the photo below:

Here's Alyse's other trick later in the day ... puckering for kisses. (Until recently, both babies "kissed" by opening their mouths wide and attempting to eat your face.)
After a long day, a bath washed away all the chocolate and concrete from cracks and crevices.

It was a great day. Thanks to everybody who traveled short and far to be with us.

Thank you for sharing such great photos. Looks like a good time was had by all. Well maybe a little less of a good time for Mitchell.

So, they sit nice like that in the bathtub now? They sure have matured since they hit the big 1.

Bath time will be a piece of cake. :)

All we need now is for Uncle Rick to teach the kids the "Introduce Yourself, Right On " cheer. Perhaps at the family get together this summer?

To Mitchell's Dziadzia:
"They" say they forgive you but believe me--"they" never forget.
