Normal. Right?

We're driving down the road and Sonja looks back to check on Zoe, who was being atypically quiet in her car seat. The little one holds her index finger in front of pursed lips and blows, as if trying to extinguish a candle. (Her version of the universal non-verbal sign for ssshhhhh.)

"Tacker sleeping," she says.

"Who's sleep..." Sonja starts to ask, but then realizes what she said. Zoe had a Ritz cracker in her lap, half covered with a blanket, and was patting it to sleep.

We laugh.

Fast forward a couple days. I get home from work and sit down in a chair in the living room, where Zoe is playing. She rolls over and ends up with her head directly beneath my left foot, which is crossed over my right leg.

"Hello Daddy's shoe," she says.

"Are you talking to my shoe?"

"Yes. Hello Daddy's sock."

I laugh, then retell the story at dinner. We laugh again.

Funny stories. But here's the reason I posted them on the blog: Ummm... this is normal, right?

I ask those parents more experienced than I... is my daughter exhibiting creativity and a sense of humor, or is she destined to be the crazy lady standing on the corner having an argument with the newspaper boxes?

Just wondering.

Better watch her. She might end up with 40 animals and all the neighborhood kids will be calling her "Cat Lady".

I vote for "creativity and a sense of humor". I know many of Zoe's relatives. They also display some unique mannerisms which endear them to us. Zoe fits right in. Have to hurry ..voices in the kitchen are calling out to me. I think it's leftover chocolate birthday cake. "Eat me!" "Eat me!"

AND YOU WOULD PREFER HER TAKING AFTER HER DZIADZ AND NOT TALKING AT ALL!!

I'm not sure if I should be offended that she'll barely speak to me yet she'll talk to your shoes and socks!?!?
I don't know if it's "normal" - but who's to say what normal is? :) She's probably more normal than the rest of us!

Seriously, I think it's completely normal. What's that word... when you associate human emotions to objects? While our kids never talk to my shoes or socks, is it really much different than talking to their blankies?

Of all the things she could be saying....I'd say its going smoothly. My kid's first word was the "s" word. Really, no sh**!!

Maybe a stuffed toy for "half covered with a blanket" would be better than the "tacker".
